On July 1, 2000 the two departments merged, creating the current Morehead City Fire EMS Department. On October 1, 2014, Morehead City Fire & EMS merged with Wildwood Fire EMS. The department now protects an area of 23.0 square miles. This includes Mitchell Village-Crab Point Fire District and the Wildwood Fire District with an approximate population of 28,000 residents between the city and two districts.
