Morehead City Declares State of Emergency - 10 p.m. Update: A State of Emergency has been declared for Morehead City, effective at 10 p.m. on Wednesday, August 30, until further notice. There are no restrictions in place at this time associated with this State of Emergency, however, the public is encouraged to limit travel as a safety measure. Tornado Watch in Effect - 8 p.m. Update: A Tornado Watch is in effect for the area until 4 a.m. on Thursday, August 31st.
Weather Risks - National Weather Service - Newport/Morehead City 6 p.m. Update: The NWS has released another weather briefing that shows a heightened flood risk, along with the potential for "many tornadoes" through 9 a.m. Thursday. There is a possibility of power outages in the area. Everyone is encouraged to have multiple ways to receive weather warnings overnight. Trash and Yard Debris Pickup - 11:45 a.m. Update: At this time, GFL is planning to run the trash pickup route on a delay Thursday. In addition, Morehead City's yard debris pickup will continue as conditions allow. This may change, so please continue to check our website and official social media for updates.
Carteret County Public Schools Update - 10:45 a.m. Update: Carteret County Public Schools will operate on a remote learning day for students on Thursday, August 31, 2023. After school activities are also canceled for Wednesday and Thursday as well.
Original Post: August 30th - 8 a.m. Report: Morehead City and the surrounding area is under a Tropical Storm Warning due to what is currently Hurricane Idalia. Flash flooding and the potential for multiple tornadoes are among the anticipated effects as a result of this storm system.
