Mayor for a Day: Marna Merrell

It has been a special day in Morehead City, as fourth-grader Marna Merrell became Mayor for a Day. This unique opportunity occurs twice a year through existing partnerships.

Mayor Merrell began her day at City Hall, learning about Morehead City's history and the duties of Mayor Jerry Jones. She signed a proclamation noting today as a Celebratory Day, and got to sit in the Council Chambers as she heard about how municipal government operates.

Then, she was treated to an extensive behind the scenes tour of the Morehead City Police Department, which included getting her fingerprints taken and trying on police officer gear. She then received a ride in a patrol car to Morehead City Fire-EMS Station 2, where she heard about the longstanding history of the department, and got to sit in the 1925 fire truck. To cap off her time here, she was sent up in the bucket of the ladder truck for an aerial view of the city.

Finally, Mayor Merrell rode in the fire truck to enjoy lunch at Plaza Mexico with her mother, Mayor Jones and City Clerk Cathy Campbell.
