Storm Preparedness

In order to be the best prepared for potential flood and other hazard events:

  • Stay Informed. Technology has made staying informed about potential disasters and in communication with first responders, family and/or friends during a disaster. Make a Plan for if your device is compromised or its battery dies. 
  • Assemble an emergency checklist and kit for your home, work, and car.
    • Home: Keep an easily accessible kit in a family designated place
      • contain at least three (3) days of supplies, non-perishable food, and water.
    • Work: Keep an easily accessible kit in a centrally designated place.
      • contain at least three (3) days of non-perishable food, water and comfortable walking shoes.
    • Car: Keep an easily accessible kit in a designated place within the car.
      • contain at least three (3) days of non-perishable food, water, first aid supplies, flares, jumper cables, and seasonal supplies.
    • For persons with disabilities, create a support network to assist in creating an emergency plan for transportation coordination and kit building with: 
      • prescription medications
      • medical alert tags and bracelets
      • water protected contact list and instructions for care or communication. 
    • For kids, teens, families and/or educators, prepare financially, discuss, update and practice emergency plans at least once a year, and create a water protected contact list and instructions for care or communication.
    • For seniors, create a support network, know housing/assistance/hospital evacuation procedures, and assemble an emergency checklist and kit.
    • For pets, make sure they have some form of identification, plan your evacuation with them in mind, build an emergency kits for them, 
  • Inventory and photograph your home's contents and put important papers and insurance policies in a safe place.
  • Plan to Evacuate: Knowing sheltering-in-place tips, evacuation routes, community shelter/final destination locations, a family/household plan are necessary decisions before a storm event.
